The placement of two compact buildings along the streets towards the lake achieves the natural continuation of the morphology and rhythm of the location. The conglomerate of existing and new buildings spans a permeable garden courtyard that decisively enhances the location’s living quality. Due to the slightly staggered arrangement of the buildings, appropriate distances are maintained between the houses as well as interesting visual relationships with the village, lake and landscape. A sustainable system was chosen for the mainly wooden constructions, while simultaneously picking up on the local building tradition in a contemporary form, as can be seen in the still existent shingled buildings in the central area. The finely structured façade envelope of varnished wooden shingles picks up on the atmosphere of the town. The façade band, which creates depth, additionally highlights the theme of shingles.
The current issue 13/2022 of TEC21 introduces the mixed-use conversion on Denkmalstrasse in Lucerne. Among others, the report highlights how the specific concept of the building achieves a lofty spatial openness despite a highly dense urban context and how the simple and raw spaces invite to a playful appropriation for living and working. Minimalism as an offer!
