The impressive, crystalline silhouette of the Pilatus massif was integrated into the design for the panorama gallery and developed further in an architectural form. The new structure is subtly fitted into the Alpine terrain and develops between existing buildings and striking rocky outcrops into an artificial topography. The polygonal, meandering ground plan and the gentle cross-sectional modulation are spatial strategies that evoke gentle transitions between the developed and undeveloped landscape. The polygonal connecting section choreographs a series of spectacular perspectives and breath-taking viewpoints, while also acting as a perceptive amplifier that stages the reference to the landscape to the fullest extent. The underlying crystalline theme of the volumetrics is also reflected in the structure, construction and materialisation, and is based on a hybrid steel and concrete composite system.
We are pleased to announce that our design of the Vertical Factory for Komax AG received the 1st prize of PRIXFORIX 2021 award. The prestigues award honors the most attractive façade of Switzerland. Along with the award the Swiss architecture magazine ‘Hochparterre’ has published a comprehensive special Edition.
The 2-layer, walkable façade of the Komax building is based on a sustainable low-tech approach. The perforated ‘Brise-Soleil’ which functions reliably all year round and in all weather conditions, effectively reduces the daily solar loads. The custom-made grid structure acts like a foliage of a tree: According to the seasons it blocks excess sunlight but also refracts it and diffuses it as pleasantly filtered light. In terms of energy, maintenance, life cycle and cost efficiency, this non-motorized façade is superior to conventional building skins in its overall balance. In addition to climatic advantages, the 2-layer façade has a number of other positive aspects. Its veranda-like concept enables escape routes, for example, and can be used as an open-air workplace and lounge at the same time. With little additional structural and spatial effort, it kills several birds with one stone. The Jury of PRIXFORIX award values the Komax building ‘as a project of our times’.
